Sex Science Social: Play Parties with Dr. Zhana! (Pay What You Can)
December 1, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pmDonation
If I go to a play party, I’ll definitely get an STI.
Sex parties are playgrounds for sexual assault and rape.
People who go to sex parties can’t have serious, emotional relationships.
Every day we are bombarded with inaccurate, moralistic, and pseudo-scientific information and advice about sex and relationships. How do you figure out what’s true and what’s not?
Join Dr. Zhana for her second Sex Science Social! One special Thursday each month, she’ll host an evening of geeking out over sexual science followed by a BYOB social with like-minded folks at the gorgeous Hacienda Villa. Dr. Zhana will present the research on each week’s topic, tell you all you need to know about the science, and hold a group discussion to hear your thoughts and questions. She’ll also have a special guest to provide their expertise, or just make things more fun. Don’t miss this awesome opportunity to take your sex education to the next level, ease your sexual concerns, answer your questions, and meet like-minded friends!
This week, Dr. Zhana and her special guest, Dr. Brooke Wells, will present their brand new research on play parties and the people who attend them!
Project Play! was an anonymous online survey (collected between April and December 2015) of over 1,300 U.S. residents who had attended at least one play party in the past year. In this presentation, Drs. Zhana and Wells will share their findings on:
1. Who goes to play parties?
2. What happens at play parties?
3. Sex, condoms, and substances at play parties
4. Sexual consent violations and negotiation at play parties
This research is not (yet) published, and will be presented by Dr. Zhana, Dr. Wells, and their research assistants for the first time ever just two weeks prior at the annual meeting of the Society for Scientific Study of Sexuality held in Phoenix, Arizona Nov 17-20. Don’t miss this extremely-hot-off-the-presses info about play parties!
Dr. Zhana is a sex researcher, NYU professor, and writer with a passion for bringing accurate sex science to the modern world. She’s doing the work of sifting through the long, complicated research papers to bring you the key takeaways with real-world application. Her goal is to use evidence-based information to help you make sense of your own sexuality, clear up confusion, discuss things you don’t feel comfortable asking your friends about, and help you navigate the diverse and fascinating world of sex.
Dr. Brooke Wells is an associate professor at Widener University, where she also directs the PhD program in human sexuality. She received her PhD in social psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and has conducted extensive research, largely focused on HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men in NYC and on sexuality and substance use among young adults. Brooke has also contributed to research examining cultural trends in sexual behavior and attitudes.
A couple of additional special guests TBA soon!
In the spirit of accessibility and inclusivity, all tickets are reserved on a “pay what you can” basis. Two volunteers are needed to help event preparation and cleanup (approximately one hour before doors open and up to one hour after event). Please email email@example.com if you’d like to help us out!
